What is mastering?

There are 2 different kinds of mastering, CD Mastering and Audio Mastering. CD mastering is when you take an already processed master, insert pq codes, isrc codes, idexes, track start and end times, total program duration, and then turn it over to the duplication/replication department.

Audio Mastering is much more involved than CD mastering and requires a qualified Mastering Engineer (ME). The ME will do everything the audio technician will do in the cd mastering process but will also listen to each track several times to get a good view of the dynamics, noise floor, clicks, pops, dirty start and/or end of tracks and overall EQ balance as well as stereo imaging. the ME's job is to get your program broadcast and mass production ready, including:

-Editing minor flaws
-Adding proper spaces between tracks
-Fades at start and end of tracks if required
-Applying noise reduction to eliminate clicks, dropouts, hum and hiss
-Adjusting stereo width
-Equalize audio across tracks
-Dynamic range expansion or compression
-Peak limit

How can I proof your work?

Initially, we take one song of your choosing, do the required work, upload it to a private folder on our server that only you and the engineer will have access to, send you the link and access info for that folder, you then audition the uploaded song, reccomend any changes you want, and we work from there.

When the work is complete, you get one CDR proof mailed to you for auditioning, if more work is required, and you wish to have a second proof, you can purchase one for $20.

How long will it take?

Depending on our workload, and the amount of work involved in your project, it could take up to 3 weeks for you to have your master completed, but generally we have it out the door within a week.

If it's mixing you need done, that can take considerably longer. The timeframe will need to be discussed between the client and engineer.

Can I cancel my order?

You can cancel at anytime, but keep in mind, that if you cancel after work has begun on your project, your deposit becomes non-refundable.

Once your project gets put into our system, we will send you an email telling you when the estimated start date will be for your project, as long as you cancel before the date in the email, your deposit will be refunded in full.

What is Digital Distribution?

Before mp3s and iTunes, CDs were the way to publish your music, and after you published your CD, you needed a distributor to put on the shelves of the retail outlets. So the same is said for digital music files, once you publish your music, you need a distributor to put it in the library of the online retailers, like iTuens, Napster and AmazonMp3, all of whom sell digital music files by the download.

What outlets do you distribute to?

Since for the time being, we do not have our Content Provider Partnership with the online retailers, we submit your music to CDBaby and the list of retailers they submit to is rather extensive. Some of them include iTunes, Rhapsody, eMusic, Napster, AmazonMp3 and more.

We can also sell your music and merchandise in our Store

How much does it cost?

Our digital distribution service costs are a one time fee of $50 per CD and $15 per single.

Can I submit mp3 files?

We rather you didn't. It's much easier to prepare your songs for the retailers if they are submitted in the proper digital format, such as CDR(cd audio, wav, aif). The integrity of fidelity will be compromised any other way.

How long until my music is live?

Once your music is submitted to the retailers, it generally takes between 48 and 72 hours for it to become live.

How do I get paid?

You will need to have a paypal account to get paid. CD Baby will payout your sales to you 4 times a year through Paypal.

TwinRecords will also payout any sales from our store to you through Paypal.

When do I get paid?

CD Baby's partners' payment schedules range from monthly to quarterly. iTunes, for instance, reports to us roughly 6 weeks after the end of any given month. So if you sold a download in the middle of the month, it could be up to 2 months before that sale is reported in your CD Baby account.

CD Baby pays out every Monday.

Do you take a percentage of my sales?

We do not take a percentage of your sales with CD Baby's retailers. However Cd Baby does take 9% of the sales, and you receive 91%.

Once TwinRecords has received their partnership, you will receive 100% of the royalties.

You can also sell your CDs and mp3s in the TwinRecords Online Store, for those sales, we do take 20% of the sales.

What is Duplication?

Duplication, CD or DVD, is the same process you use with a CD/DVD writer. Usually used for smaller quantities, (1-300), uses the method of leaving 'burn marks' on a blank CD-R. There are plenty of commercial duplicators that can do one disc at a time, or up to 11 at a time.

Duplication vs. Replication

Duplication, as explained above, is mostly used for smaller quantities, therefore the cost is a little higher per disc, although nowadays, professional duplicating almost, and I stress almost, looks as good as replication.

Replication is a completely different process. Once the glass master is made in a clean room, all the digital information is printed on a stamper, and that stamper is used to print the information onto a balnk CD. A replicated CD is done in one quick instant, as opposed to burning which can take a few minutes. Most replicting machines can do an average of about 700 disc per hour.

How do I submit my project for duplication?

The best way to submit your project to TwinRecords for duplication is to mail it to us on a digital format, such as a CDR or DVDR. You could also do it through yousendit.com, setup an account with them, upload your files and send the links to info@twinrecords.net.

Your graphic files should also be on digital media and in hi-res tiff format.

What is Audio Forensics?

Audio Forensics is scientific investigation using technology to determine the authenticity of an audio clip. Forensics is also used for audio restoration, to help the content become more audible. Most of these audio clips are used in criminal and civil court proceedings.

The forensics engineer at TwinRecords uses Dynamic Spectral Subtraction to remove any background noise interfering with the desired content, also uses filters, noise reduction and equalization to maximize audio quality, and after 8 years of forensics work, we have only come across 3 files that were unrecoverable.

What is PCI compliance?

The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is a set of requirements designed to ensure that ALL companies that process, store or transmit credit card information maintain a secure environment. Essentially any merchant that has a Merchant ID (MID).
The Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) was launched on September 7, 2006 to manage the ongoing evolution of the Payment Card Industry (PCI) security standards with focus on improving payment account security throughout the transaction process. The PCI DSS is administered and managed by the PCI SSC (www.pcisecuritystandards.org), an independent body that was created by the major payment card brands (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and JCB.).

It is important to note, the payment brands and acquirers are responsible for enforcing compliance, not the PCI council.

Is TwinRecords PCI Compliant?
