| Mastering |
Mastering is the last step in the recording process before mass production. Generally there are 2 kinds of mastering, Audio Mastering and CD mastering. Although CD mastering is part of audio master process, cd mastering does not involve any dsp or audio manipulation of any kind.
CD Mastering
Alot of 'online mastering' outfits claim to offer superior mastering at dirt cheap prices, when in fact, generally it is cd mastering they are offering. This kind of mastering is needed when the product is already broadcast ready but not replication/duplication ready. The CD mastering process includes an audio technician who does the following:
-Listens to the entire program for dropouts, glitches and/or digital peaks.
-Compiles track Start and End times with indexes.
-Inserting ISRC and PQ codes if needed.
-Bounce program to 16bit Stereo, 44.1KHZ.
-Document Total Time of program including track durations.
Once this process is complete, the master is ready to be handed off to be made into a glass master for replication, or ready to be used for duplication.
Audio Mastering
Audio Mastering is much more involved than CD mastering and requires a qualified Mastering Engineer (ME). The ME will do everything the audio technician will do in the cd mastering process but will also listen to each track several times to get a good view of the dynamics, noise floor, clicks, pops, dirty start and/or end of tracks and overall EQ balance as well as stereo imaging. the ME's job is to get your program broadcast and mass production ready, this includes:
| -Editing minor flaws -Adding proper spaces between tracks -Fades at start and end of tracks if required -Applying noise reduction to eliminate clicks, dropouts, hum and hiss -Adjusting stereo width -Equalize audio across tracks -Dynamic range expansion or compression -Peak limit |
Again, the post production process is complete, and the final is ready to be delivered to the replication department.

Mixing is much more involved than mastering, it includes more than just levels like compression, reverb, eq etc. Below are examples of a bad mix which you wouldn't want to submit to a mastering engineer, and an example of one you would.
